Another successful night has reminded me to write another review! Food was good as usual. Me and my partners had the following: French onion soup, minestrone soup, chicken Parmesan with penne and spaghetti , ham and chicken pineapple special, chicken quesadillas, baked scrod and teriyaki chicken. Sides included salad , rice pilaf and potatoes. Pickles and rolls were good. Service was great. Price was even better. Lastly the desserts were out of this world ! Chocolate cake and death by chocolate! The meal was great! Will be returning as usual!

Totally a cross between a diner and a retirement home. I'm not kidding, the young crowd does not hang out here! That being said, the food is decent. I got some pretty good lobster mac and cheese here for $15. The french onion soup is pretty solid. I find myself craving it from time to time. I was asked to go here by some friends and didn't want to be such a negative person and just suck it up, but next time when I have a gut feeling about a place than I have to put up a better fight for at least Wendy's or Burger King because this place was as low as you can go when it comes to chain restaurants and I wish I had the time I spent here back! Warning: this review is based only off of Gregg's cakes. They seem to be a Rhode Island staple. Their Death By Chocolate is to die for... Literally. Layers and layers of chocolate cake and chocolate frosting with chocolate chips on top. Their heath bar crunch is also amazing. Chocolate cake with toffee nut crunch. All of their cakes I have tried are RICH. The only downside to Gregg's cakes is that they're kind of expensive, but worth the treat once-in-awhile or for a special occasion (i.e. birthdays and such). By the slice is around $6-$7... So you might as well just get a whole cake! But really...

I came here for my usual Death By Chocolate and left too full to even think about ordering it! Since Gregg's is a RI chain, I feel this review will reflect on the chain as a whole. Atmosphere: Large, with a lot of nooks and crannies. It feels disorganized. We were seated way in the corner and it felt like I had trouble getting attention from the servers at first. It did improve after that. Appetizers: It's been years, so I had to get the stuffies. Unfortunately, Gregg's adds sausage, and the stuffies were mostly sausage and breading with relatively less clam. That was a major disappointment to me. The white clam chowder was relatively watery without enough chunks of ingredients inside. Main course: Somewhat redeeming, I guess. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish portion was gigantic, but I later found out that it was an average-size fish filet with a pound of breading on it. No wonder I wasn't hungry for dessert! Way too bready. The regular and sweet potato fries were both very good. Dessert: Look. For all of the above, I'm at 2.5 stars. It really wasn't up to the Gregg's experiences I've had in the past. But even though I didn't order it this time, Death By Chocolate. It's always here, and always willing to rescue you from a bad time. I'll keep trying Gregg's locations just for that, and hopefully get more hits than misses in the future.

I am honestly really surprised that Gregg's only gets three stars on Yelp. It's a RI tradition, guys. Come on! So what the inside hasn't been updated since 1970 and the waitresses haven't either. Their food is not bad!! Half sour pickles immediately appearing on your table when you sit down and their desserts are enough to give them 4 stars in my book. Regular, safe bet, go-to meals for me are the Tuna Melt, Corned Beef Reuben and Fish and Chips. I will say the Fish and Chips have gotten smaller and smaller with each visit. Get on that, Gregg's! As for desserts, you definitely cannot go wrong with the Hasbro Giving Cake, Heath Bar Crunch Cake or their Cheesecake. It's almost Pumpkin Cheesecake time!

The three stars are for the dessert... I'll get to that in a minute. The service and staff were exceptional. The girl seating people was really friendly and kind. My waitress was good. No issues Five for them. My appetizer was Mozzarella Sticks. They were ok. Store Bought frozen. I ordered the "Chicken and Biscuits". Not sure of what the chicken dish I actually got was. It was more of a "Chicken Pot Pie without the crust". It was a very loose watery gravy and not a real country thick gravy as I expected. Overall it was bland. I added salt for taste. The biscuits were quite delicious. I wanted the Lemon Meringue Pie but they were out, so I ordered the Carrot Cake. Wow, I should've ordered the Carrot Cake before. Easily one of the best ones i've had. Five stars for the dessert. I like Greggs but it can be hit or miss with the food. The desserts, however, are worth it.

If their breakfast, lunch or dinner menu were as good as their desserts I would give them 5 stars. Gregg's has by far the most delicious desserts in all of RI and neighboring MA. Their staff are friendly and professional. They set the bar very high with their desserts and do not reach that bar with their breakfast, lunch or dinner.
First off the waitress was really nice. I went with a girlfriend/housemate of mine for my birthday. We just found out she is pregnant and I am apparently having a sympathetic pregnancy lol!! I love their pickles. We explained to the waitress that we both needed pickles and to keep them coming!! She was great. Wasn't too attentive, but she was always around and we never had to find her and ask for more pickles or drinks. My friend got this wrap with seasonal veggies that she absolutely loved. The fries we agreed sucked, but the wrap made up for it. I got the calamari pasta. The calamari was seasoned PERFECTLY!! It was exactly what k wanted. The olives and peppers were perfect. The pasta however was a bit bland. I filled up on pickles and broccoli cheddar soup which were also great so I couldn't finish my entree. I won't lie when I ate it later inn..I seasoned the pasta. So they lost a star for bland pasta and dry French fries. Oh did I mention I got turtle cheesecake and that I loved that too? Lol overall a great experience!!

Gregg's is an absolute waste of time and money. The only thing that it has going for it is deserts, and even those have become lackluster. You can get better service at a McDonald's then you can at Gregg's. So if you like horrible service and food that seems like a 6 year old made it then go to Gregg's, if you're an intelligent human who wants food that doesn't look they pulled it out of my 90 year old grandmother's pantry then go somewhere else. It felt like a nursing home cafeteria. (Not an exaggeration) The food had absolutely no flavor, the waitresses were slow, and the atmosphere was dead. I went there because someone brought me a delicious chocolate cake from there and I assumed that it would be good based on that cake. Oh no. Hate to give this place only three stars cause i've been there numerous times but after tonight i cant in good conscience give them anymore. Let me preface this bad review with the positive things i have to say. My boyfriend and i have eaten there (bar only) on a handfull of occassions and always on off times and had a good experience with both bar and food. Ok now to the bad! Tonight was our first night there on a very busy Friday night, we got the last seats at the bar at the time which happen to be right at the entrance to the kitchen. Immediately we picked up on the fact that a waiter named Mike was clearly new and struggling although trying and none of his co-workers helped him besides one waitress named Arianna and i think the girl was named Amy. Normally i would pay no attention to restaurant politics but i was horrifed by how two other co-workers treated Mike. First off Snot (actually named Shane but he touched, scratched and swiped his nose so much we gave him that nickname VOMIT) and our bartender/waitress Patty who at one point said to Mike after he made a mistake and asked if he was in trouble, you aren't now but you're about to be. I dont know for sure but it seemed like she was in some sort of authority position because everyone seemed afraid of her. Well first off she left the bar empty for significant periods of time a least three times and we had to go out of our way to ask for another drink everytime ours was empty (the bar is not that big). The food was still good so i wont knock that and this is my only bad experience but i was quite horrified so i had to be noted.

Gregg's is a restaurant I've eaten at a number of times, but never reviewed. The atmosphere and building are nice, neither dated nor ultra modern. The prices are reasonable. I've never had a bad meal here, and never had an excellent meal here. Service on this trip was good, and that's typical. We were a group of 4 and everybody liked what they ordered. The desserts are what really make this restaurant better than average. Mile high pies, giant cupcakes, eclairs the size of sub sandwiches...just killer desserts made in house. The desserts push the rating above average. The only thing I don't like, is there are really too many items on the menu. Just picking a burger out is difficult!

The lobster roll, also underwhelming. Even the french fries were boring. Would it kill you to add some spice? Well maybe it would kill someone. This place would be Luby's if it weren't for the insane cake section of the menu. The chocolate lived up to legend, though it wasn't exactly the density of chocolate flavor I was expecting. If I come back, it's only for the cake. Spoken like a true pre-diabetic. And I'm not going to feel bad about it, especially if they don't refill my water.

The food here is average quality, and the menu has a very generic selection. However, a few things stand out to lift this place up to 4 stars. First of all, I love the atmosphere of the downstairs pub. The drink menu is awesome, especially the apple cider cocktails. They'll warm you up and make you pleasantly tipsy. The service is generally pretty good. Desserts are huge and supposedly great... I haven't tried them recently, so I can't say how great they really are. Pretty impressive selection of that too, though, with some unique offerings. All for a very reasonable price. Great place to go for brunch to get rid of that hangover. Also open pretty late on the weekends, so great for a late night snack.

Here's my issue with Gregg's.. although the desserts are fabulous, the staff for the most part is friendly.. i wish they put a little more effort into their actual meals. My boyfriend and i get takeout here several times a week.. he loves the place, i think it's alright. The place definately needs a remodel.It's definately a food dining experience for people who have simple tastes. We normally end up here after doing the we're hungry but don't want to cook schpeal and just do the takeout scene. I can't say we've ever been disappointed with teh food.. like i said i just wish they'd add new things to the menu and mix it up a bit.

Greg's is usually a pretty busy place. Popular with the older folks, for sure. The food is good, and reasonable. The place is a bit dingy and outdated and the menu is also! This might not be such a bad thing. If you liked the menu 20 years ago, it's still there. You can still get a chopped sirloin, club sandwich, Monterrey chicken, or my favorite, the "hot bird" which is an open face turkey sandwich with fries and cole slaw. Get extra gravy and ask for the bread toasted. You can get a fried chicken cutlet with turkey gravy, a Reuben sandwich, or a nice meatloaf or chicken parm. All my old favorites. Nice comfort food. Back in the day, they had a pickle barrel in the corner and you could help yourself. They still have them but you have to ask your server for some, and you should because they are part of the place's history. After a meal, I'm usually stuffed. Desserts are much too much. If I got a slice of strawberry shortcake, I'd have to take home half. I used to buy cakes there for every birthday but the prices keep going up. I don't think they are worth it. A golden layer cake is $27! I buy my cakes at BJs now. I bought two birthday cakes there recently, a chocolate mousse cake and a marble cake that were as good or better than any restaurant dessert I've had. They're around 1/3 the price too. All in all, perfectly good food, nursing home decor, expensive desserts... Not really a place for date nite, unless you're at a point where your favorite cologne is Ben Gay! You can still grab a satisfying meal there. Pretty much sums it up.

We went to the DownStairs Pub for lunch. Food was good, I had the burger with mushrooms and My girlfriend had the Thanksgiving sandwich. Other than that it was odd. We were the only customers of our waiter. He seemed busy talking at the bar. Gave our credit card to another staff member to hurry the bill along. There were children jumping down the stairs in the middle of the building. Went on for over ten minutes. A staff member noticed. Did nothing. I just was not very impressed overall.

Gregg's has always been a family favorite. I've gone to eat here so many times. But recently it has gone downhill. Came on a Saturday night (understandably busy). When we were seated I asked for bread. Which took over 40 mins to get. Our order was taken about 20 mins after. We were here for over two hours, and honestly I wish I said something about the food because it was terrible. Firstly, I witnessed our waitress microwaving the tables food next to us. She microwaved the food twice, then brought it to the table where the woman complained it was cold and she took it back to the microwave! I'm pretty sure if the woman wanted microwaved lobster, she would have eaten at home. Could not believe I witnessed this at greggs of all places. Something must have been wrong in the kitchen because I ordered a baked fish and when it got the the table, it was cold. Baked seafood shouldn't ever be cold. Then it took us another 40 minutes just to be able to get our bill. Not sure whose to blame here. The waitress was overbooked for tables I think because not only was she running around like a mad woman, she had sweat pouring down her face. Probably won't ever eat here again. Very disappointed.

Well I've been buying their desserts for years, I decided to take my family there for lunch. It had to be one of the most unappetizing meals I had ever eaten. I ordered baked schrod with spicy cajun sauce. The sauce tasted like jarred tomato sauce and it had no flavor never mind spiciness. Deserts here are to die for ! The death by chocolate is phenomena! It has so much flavor and every time i have it is very rich, soft and fresh ! I stopped in today for some dessert to go. Chocolate cake and a frosted apple strudel. The staff was nice and the desserts very fresh. The frosting on the cake is way too sweet for my taste though, and I can handle some sugary stuff. Strudel was good. The cake at Pastiche is balanced much better so I think I will stick with that, especially since the prices are about the same. If I were in the area I may try something else here though. An ode to my dad: a guy with simple tastes, with whom I meet up to enjoy a monthly father-daughter dinner. I always ask dad where he'd like to go for these meals. I really don't have to go through this formality, because nine times out of ten, we end up at Gregg's. I'm never unhappy with my meals at Gregg's. They're pretty standard and straightforward. Some highlights include French Onion Soup and a wide array of seasonal salads. I try to eat healthy here because well, I feel that a lot of the menu is calorie-laden but not really special enough to waste the splurge. So on most visits, while dad chows down on chicken and biscuits or fish and chips, I'm digging into a large garden salad with grilled steak. The service is mostly decent, though occasionally you'll get someone who clearly doesn't want to get to know you. Considering the venue, this is not a big deal to me - we're not paying for white glove service, just dependable service. Sometimes you need to get wrapped in the comfort of predictability: the familiar faces of family, the same old haunts where you grew up eating years of Sunday dinners. For dad and I, Gregg's is our place. Like clockwork, every time we stand at the cash register to pay our bill, the server asks, "How was your meal?" And like clockwork, in response to this question, my dad answers with mock incredulity, "This is Gregg's, isn't it?" As if anyone needed to ask - if dad were a Yelper, this would undoubtedly be a five-star review.

Been going to Gregg's since I was a young kid with my folks. Never been disappointed. They have a huge menu and the portions are big for all meals. The fact that they are open so late is a plus too. I could have been taking part in their rewards program for decades but never signed up. They have double point specials and I never need an excuse to eat there, or get takeout. Their dessert menu is amazing, we usually get cakes for special occasions from them. Keep up the great work Gregg's!.

I love the food here. They have A LOT of options and a lot of different types of food. They give you complimentary rolls and pickles to start and most meals come with soup or salad. The plates are big and will fill you up. Very good prices for what it is. My favorites are the potato skins to start and the calamari pasta. I rarely have room for dessert but they are known for their indulgent desserts. I prefer sitting downstairs because it's a smaller, quieter, and not as bright and the service is a little faster. Generally speaking the service isn't very good and a little slow all around but I go for the food. Love meeting with friends here and I go as often as I can.

If I end up at Gregg's it's usually because the boyfraand and I have been doing the "I'm hungry" "I don't know what I want" "I don't feel like cooking" thing for at least an hour and we end up driving by Gregg's. I've never been disappointed there. They have big salads and the red chowder is yummy. You can't walk in and miss the dessert case with the HUGE cakes teasing you from behind the glass. I've been known to stop in just to get a slice of cake for the road on particularly rough days. Gregg is like an old stand by. You don't really go for the atmosphere or the best meal of your life. It's just a place to stop in and get some huge food for a reasonable price. Done and done.

I love this chain. It's a family run business that has spread to 4 or 5 sites throughout the RHode Island area. the food is excellent and the pricces are good, Helpings are also large. If you don't want to wait in the line on a Friday or Saturday night, sit in the pub! Rhode Island is smoke free now so it makes no difference. The pub is a little more intimate, with dimmed lights also. I've never waited longer than 10 minutes in the pub for a table.

I didn't exactly mean to have dinner here. I was well aware of the desserts and had heard vague "Oh, they have food too." comments from friends and family. We went on a Friday, but on the late side of the dinner crowd-around 8ish. It was not exceedingly busy. Our food was good. The husband had fish and chips, I had a Thanksgiving sandwich, and Little Miss had a hot dog, hold the bun (a helpful offer). It wasn't exceptional, but it was good in a local restaurant, Eileen Darlings sort of way. I would have really enjoyed the warm rolls if we'd had a couple more to go with the 8 pats of butter we had and, of course, the desserts were amazing. I'm not proud of it, but I fought my toddler for a couple forkfuls of peanut butter chips on the chocolate cake. If this was the sum total of my experience, there'd be more stars. What killed those stars? The service. It was awful. I got an impression of annoyance from the host when we were first seated, but I'm willing to let that slide. It took our waiter a bit more than a few minutes to make his way over. He asked if we knew what we wanted. No, I said, it was our first time eating here. He told us he'd give us a few minutes and started head off. We quite obviously did not have menus; I had to ask him for them while he was headed away. Eventually he made his way back, took our drink order, and told us he'd give us a few more minutes. This was becoming a theme. Third time around, our drinks arrived, and my husband had a couple questions. Ready to order? Not quite, but... I'll give you a few minutes. ...I had questions, my husband said forlornly to the empty air. It was kind of like having Houdini wait on you. We stared at each other, waiting, and took turns colouring the kids' menu. My husband finally ended up flagging down the busboy, who was actually really knowledgeable and made a good recommendation on the fish and chips. When the waiter finally reappeared, we figured we'd better order fast. My husband had already finished his soda. The waiter said he'd bring out some rolls, which was good, because we were all starving by now. The rolls made it out in a semi-timely fashion and were dropped off, drive-by style. They were nice and warm and practically useless since we had no silverware. Again, I had to resort to trying to flag down the waiter before he disappeared. We lucked out, because when he dropped off the silverware, he noticed my husband's empty glass and supposed he might want a refill. We enjoyed our dinner without seeing our waiter again. I saw several other tables' waitstaff, which was nice. He drifted back by, I ordered my dessert "for here" and when my husband ordered, he was asked if it was to go. Maybe this is a regular request, one for here and one to go (we'd ordered different things), but it seemed odd to me. Then, the cheque arrived and our often-absent waiter suddenly was hovering a table away. I think I saw more of him while I was paying the bill than the entire time rest of our meal. It was impressively awful service. I understand being a waiter is a tough job and I always try to be extra polite. I try to streamline requests, make sure my kid isn't behaving like a heathen, with the pleases and the thank yous. If she makes a mess beyond normal eating, I try to pick it up as much as possible. I understand if things take longer when it's super busy or understaffed. If I have to make a weird request, I'll probably apologise for it. It takes a lot for me to say it's awful service. The kicker is that the food is pretty tasty and well priced. We're pretty much in agreement that we won't ever dine in again, but takeaway? That's a possibility, especially with their excellent desserts.

I don't know CAKE what it is CAKE about this place CAKE that makes me CAKE come back CAKE. Ok ok I do know the reason and it is the cake. Let me review the other things that I like about Greg's and then I'll get to the cake. So it mainly Q-tips that go there and the median age drops significantly when someone under the age of 35 comes in. But they know what they want and this place is it. The food is typical New England fare that depending on the item you might have to add more salt and pepper. Mondays and Tuesdays are the best days to go because of the package deal (beverage which can be alcoholic entree and dessert). But what everyone loves are the desserts. Now I have only been living in Southeastern Mass for the past 8 years so its not like I grew up on this stuff. My first experience with Greg's was at a work potluck. Someone brought a carrot cake in. I remember the person in the cubicle next to me telling me I better get some cake first or by the time you want any it will be gone. I can honestly say that I haven't had a bad cake there. My favorite is the red velvet cake but I do have to say that the raspberry coconut isn't half bad either.

We had Gregg's in our Saturday dinner night out rotation for about two years. Mostly because of the pub downstairs...has better atmosphere and service than the upstairs/main dining area. They have a HUGE menu, but I can count on one hand the things that I think are worth eating. Definitely the deserts, the chowder, the pickles...aaand that's about it. Everything else is about average or below average, and I've tried just about everything. To be honest I can do better myself at home. For example the pot pie is not a pot pie at all. They just put down some mashed potatoes, strips of chicken, some dried up biscuits, and cover it with gravy that has peas and carrots in it. Guess what the country style chicken and biscuits is? The exact same thing! I hate to say it because it makes me sound like a food snob, but that really offended me and completely turned me off to Greggs. It's like they don't care. We really did try to like it, but after having one subpar meal after another we decided to take it out of the rotation for good. It just doesn't cut it compared to other local restaurants like The Grist Mill, 2 Pauls, Not Your Average Joe's, Chardonnay's, etc. Sure, you might pay 3 or 4 dollars more per plate at those places, but it's 100 times better, and to be honest there's no comparison. I think they're comfortable with their level of quality and will continue to do just fine without us...as it's always packed at Greggs.

They make some really good desserts. They have good soup as well. But I cannot recommend any of the other food that I've tried. My steak sandwich was bland and flavorless and was only warm (I ordered it hot - I had the option of hot or cold) and the fries were not good nor were they hot enough. How do you mess up fries?! I also did not enjoy the dine-in experience. The staff seemed like they don't enjoy their jobs and most of the other patrons were elderly. Not the kind of atmosphere I find it fun to be in. I will only get the soup and dessert as take-out in the future.

When I was a small child my family went to Gregg's. We visited multiple times between this location's opening in 1979 and my grandmother's death in 1983. After not having a reason to visit the area we never made it back. I remember walking in as a child and seeing the dessert cases full of cakes. I specifically remember their chocolate/vanilla checkerboard cake which totally blew my mind because I had no idea how they made it. Jump ahead to 2012 to my first time in the place since 1982/1983. There is no more checkerboard cake but there's still a lobby full of great looking desserts. They have eclairs the size of sub rolls!!! The vibe is definitely that of the bygone American family restaurant - think Howard Johnson's (if you know what that is). The clientele is exactly how other's have described - q-tips (white haired folk) and families with children. The menu is filled with a mix of middle-of-the-road items... nothing too bland nothing too spicy. The roast turkey dinner was fine. Someone else had the eggplant parm which was fine. I will up my enthusiasm and say the appetizer onion rings were amazing. The whole time we were there, waitstaff were walking by with gigantic portions of great looking desserts going to other tables. By the time we were done though we didn't have room for dessert.... But fear not! You best believe we left there with a shopping bag full of cake slices togo!! Subtract out the nostalgia for me and you have a decent family restaurant with food a tier or two above IHOP or Denny's but with way more options plus awesome desserts. You won't be blown away but if you're hungry and you're not looking for fancy-shmancy, you won't be disappointed.

Gregg's: a Rhode Island tradition. I think that makes these restaurants sound much cooler than they actually are; but, hell - if I am in East Providence and have a hankering for a tuna club, guess we're I'm going? Gregg's produces what many people around here want: low cost, classic food, not too spicy, not too bland. Big portions. Huge menu. In general, they seem to appeal most to the q-tips of this great state and their affinity for open face turkey sandwiches and roast beef dinners (these people deserve a place where they feel comfortable and they love to eat, too!), so although this place is not my stee-lo, I am not gonna hate on it heavy-like. There are many things that I like about Gregg's: I like the concept of a separate pub area where the wood is nice and dark. I like their whole crazy cake thang, that they've developed that niche in the Rhode Island market and people LOVE their towering desserts. I like their ridiculously delicious homemade pickles. I like that they have portabella mushrooms as a regular menu item - I can get them in a club, on a wrap, or on a salad. Finally, and this might expose me as the old lady I am: I LOVE that I can get grapenut pudding there every night of the week. Woot!

I think I've been to all the Gregg's locations now. This is probably my favorite traditional American cuisine restaurant of all time. Gregg's solid menu and reliable service has never gone down since my family has patronized the business. It is not haute cuisine but it is not diner greasy spoon either. It's a reliable restaurant to go to when you have people who cannot agree on what to eat. It is a sufficient restaurant to go to to celebrate family celebrations that are not quite holidays but are more than sport shindigs like elementary school graduations. It's a place you take your grandparents to because they will be comfortable there. Gregg's is well known for they're deserts. Their sky high pies and enormous cakes are displayed in a revolving glass carousel in their Warwick restaurant. They are a treat that you want to save room for. This is why I really like Gregg's: Pickles and warm bread rolls with real butter that you don't have to ask for. Drink refills at no cost that you don't have to ask for. A muted but maintained dining room. A homey feeling with booths that are comfortable and not isolating. Pubs in case you don't really want to see children while you are dining. Food that is down home fare. And specials that change as well as daily specials that are distinctive but not so unusual you wonder who wrote the menu. Tonight we ordered the Nachos, (fresh fried tortilla chips baked with monterey jack/American cheese blend and topped with sour cream, tomatoes, scallions and salsa,) the French Meat Pie, (a small pie made of pastry filled with ground beef and pork,) the Chicago Fire, (roast beef, turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing, served on grilled rye bread,) and of course a piece of chocolate layer cake. The French Meat Pie comes with two sides and I ordered a salad and a mashed potatoes. I've always eye-balled this entree and was recommended it by a friend for years. It was hot and delicious and flaky and hardy. The mashed potatoes were not that great, this side of reconstituted flakes but filling. An unseasoned chicken (weird) gravy accompanied the Meat Pie. The salad was a basic salad with some croutons on top and NO CHEESE was added (thank you). So sick of cheese on everything. And a garnish of an orange slice on a Kale leaf. I know that is not necessary but to me it is an old fashioned touch that is out of style at the national chains like Applebee's and even local ones like Chelo's. Maybe it's just me but a fresh garnish adds a touch of class that says: "please put your napkin in your lap, be polite and enjoy your meal." It also can make a regular entree look special; the little things are noticeable to me. Both C and I ordered meals we don't normally order. His Chicago Fire was almost as big as a Geoff's sandwich. It was delicious and juicy and he enjoyed it. The pickle surprisingly wasn't as good as the table pickles. Not a big deal really. The fries are fries but as C commented; any restaurant in RI that leaves the malt vinegar on the table is my kind of restaurant. Vinegar turns fries into a tangy treat as long as they're crisp and hot. Gregg's also has sweet potato fries which shows that they do keep up with basic restaurant trends. The nachos were simple with refried pinto beans not whole black beans and I didn't get one jalapeño pickled or fresh nor any olives, too bad. I'm not complaining, mind you. I knew what I was in for when I came here. This is the place to go to when you have that friend or relative that cannot take spices or heat. Like I said people with stomach trouble, the elderly, little children and others who just are not that into unique dishes will be happy with this place. It is down-home cooking in Rhode Island. Italian (meaning some pasta dishes,) sandwiches (all sorts,) and burgers, seafood, and New England traditional foods like Liver and Onions and a Turkey Dinner. They also serve salads and "Healthy Choice" selections with additions to flavor normally bland diet foods like lemon, crumb topping and Creole sauce and provide fat and calorie grams for each option. The menu is big and full of options. Some other nods to basic eating trends can be found on their paper place mats. Smart Diner Rewards Program, The Giving Cake (for each slice and each cake sold a percent is donated to Hasbro Children's Hospital,) Fundraising Opportunities, and The Giving Tree Project as well as being certified as a Green Restaurant. So if you are inclined to feel that the establishments you support should be community oriented as well as earth friendly you won't feel guilty coming here. You can also order their desserts for holidays and platters to bring home for parties. If you can't decide where to go with a hungry family and you want good service with a traditional flair Gregg's is really the best place to select.

Well, I'd give them 3,5 stars overall: 3 stars for the food and 4 stars for the service! SHORT: Gregg's is somewhere between Applebee's and Cheesecake Factory. The only difference is Gregg's is RI-only! Keep your expectations modest and you're definitely not going to be disappointed. LONG: I have been in Rhode Island for like six years now and I have driven by Gregg's (all four locations) at least a thousand times, but never got the chance to actually grab a bite there. Me and local friends pick a new place to eat every week (can be Gracie's or Gregg's lol) and meet for dinner. And, this week, we decided on Gregg's as they have been telling me how they used to come here when they were 10 years old. So, Gregg's really is some kind of a suburban RI tradition. Here is my experience: - Dine downstairs (Pub) instead of the upstairs. It definitely has more character to it. - Monday & Tuesday nights they have specials (you get a drink, soup/salad, entree and a dessert for $16!!) I ordered a quite delicious grilled salmon with brown rice and vegetables as my entree. So, they do have healthy options. - Our waitress (Martha) was absolutely amazing! I think the service wasn't even this attentive at Gracie's, which is the hot spot for haute cuisine in Downtown Providence. She is definitely one of the select few waitresses that deserve 25% tip... She got our complicated orders all right and everything came on time. Brought a second round of bread w/o making us ask for it, constant drink refills, 5 different pens with the check and she never disappeared from 'the scene'. Surprisingly I might have had one of the genuinely five-star services I've ever experienced in my life, at a suburban local chain restaurant in Rhode Island! - Save room for dessert my friends!! I got the DBC Cake (the infamous Death By Chocolate Cake). It wasn't like "OMG, this is truly legendary", but it tasted like a good chocolate birthday cake. But their dessert menu is actually as various as the regular menu at Cheesecake Factory! Lotsa choices! OVERALL: If you're in mood for a low-key dinner on a Monday or Tuesday night (or craving a bad-for-you kinda dessert), definitely come here. Satisfying food and really great value! Again, keep in mind that Gregg's is basically an old school local chain that's somewhere between Applebee's/Cheesecake Factory.

I ordered a Turkey Club (My other universal comparison item) (plus it's quick easy and hard to screw up) I must say Gregg delivered very tasty! bread toasted just right not over done and dry. The Turkey was fresh and not day old lunch meat! I asked the waitress who was super nice! about Greggs and she said they are still a Family owned restaurant which is cool. Only draw back is every-time I go there and ask for gray with my fries they usually forget it and then when they do bring it, it's this ity bity lil thing and I have s plate full of fries! sigh!

The best part about Gregg's is their dessert!!! No matter what you choose its great! I've been there many times but it was my 1st time going with my boyfriend. We got fresh yummy bread and pickled cucumbers to start with our soups - minestrone, real good! I got a pasta plate which included broccoli but asked them to remove it and they did, my boyfriend got the chicken pot pie which he swears was SO good, but even better when he reheated the leftovers the next day. He got the cheesecake for dessert with cherries, awesome cheesecake but he says the cherries were too much. I got the raspberry coconut cake, OH MY GOD it was so FRIGGIN' GOOD!!! Huge slices too!!! Previously when I was there, I got the chocolate layer cake which is also to die for. It's definitely a place to go grab a drink and a desert.... Great prices... It's an old fashioned kind of restaurant, I think they need to modernize it a little bit. Though still a nice place.

Four words - Heath. Bar. Crunch. Cake. My ideal birthday, anniversary, any day treat. Gregg's also has a killer steak Caesar salad. I was addicted to the Caesar dressing and its one of the things I greatly miss about living in RI. The wait staff treats you like family and know the names of all the senior citizens who eat here weekly, if not nightly. And it's kind of like a diner. Kind of. And some of them are even open kind of late. Don't want to wait? Get a slice of divine Heath Bar Crunch Cake to go.

I went back to Gregg's with my parents who are in their 60s after not being there for many years. We went to the East Providence restaurant mainly because I'm getting married soon and want to have pies instead of cakes at the wedding. But, we got lunch. The menu is huge. I had the portabella mushroom panini which was really good. My parents liked their food a lot. The pies were OK. Not as fabulous as I'd hoped/remembered. The crust was eh- just OK. My mom categorized it as "industrial". The interior needs some serious work.. The place had that old people smell and it was DREARY. Anyway, we're going elsewhere for our wedding pies. Sorry Gregg!

Another successful night has reminded me to write another review! Food was good as usual. Me and my partners had the following: French onion soup, minestrone soup, chicken Parmesan with penne and spaghetti , ham and chicken pineapple special, chicken quesadillas, baked scrod and teriyaki chicken. Sides included salad , rice pilaf and potatoes. Pickles and rolls were good. Service was great. Price was even better. Lastly the desserts were out of this world ! Totally a cross between a diner and a retirement home. I'm not kidding, the young crowd does not hang out here! That being said, the food is decent. I got some pretty good lobster mac and cheese here for $15. The french onion soup is pretty solid. I find myself craving it from time to time. This place is perfect if you're hungry, want something quick, but not fast food.

Warning: this review is based only off of Gregg's cakes. They seem to be a Rhode Island staple. Their Death By Chocolate is to die for... Literally. Layers and layers of chocolate cake and chocolate frosting with chocolate chips on top. Their heath bar crunch is also amazing. Chocolate cake with toffee nut crunch. All of their cakes I have tried are RICH. The only downside to Gregg's cakes is that they're kind of expensive, but worth the treat once-in-awhile or for a special occasion (i.e. birthdays and such). By the slice is around $6-$7... So you might as well just get a whole cake! But really...

I came here for my usual Death By Chocolate and left too full to even think about ordering it! Since Gregg's is a RI chain, I feel this review will reflect on the chain as a whole. Atmosphere: Large, with a lot of nooks and crannies. It feels disorganized. We were seated way in the corner and it felt like I had trouble getting attention from the servers at first. It did improve after that. Appetizers: It's been years, so I had to get the stuffies. Unfortunately, Gregg's adds sausage, and the stuffies were mostly sausage and breading with relatively less clam. That was a major disappointment to me. The white clam chowder was relatively watery without enough chunks of ingredients inside. Main course: Somewhat redeeming, I guess. I ordered the fish and chips. The fish portion was gigantic, but I later found out that it was an average-size fish filet with a pound of breading on it. No wonder I wasn't hungry for dessert! Way too bready. The regular and sweet potato fries were both very good. Dessert: Look. For all of the above, I'm at 2.5 stars. It really wasn't up to the Gregg's experiences I've had in the past. But even though I didn't order it this time, Death By Chocolate. It's always here, and always willing to rescue you from a bad time. I'll keep trying Gregg's locations just for that, and hopefully get more hits than misses in the future.

I am honestly really surprised that Gregg's only gets three stars on Yelp. It's a RI tradition, guys. Come on! So what the inside hasn't been updated since 1970 and the waitresses haven't either. Their food is not bad!! Half sour pickles immediately appearing on your table when you sit down and their desserts are enough to give them 4 stars in my book. Regular, safe bet, go-to meals for me are the Tuna Melt, Corned Beef Reuben and Fish and Chips. I will say the Fish and Chips have gotten smaller and smaller with each visit. Get on that, Gregg's! As for desserts, you definitely cannot go wrong with the Hasbro Giving Cake, Heath Bar Crunch Cake or their Cheesecake. It's almost Pumpkin Cheesecake time!

The three stars are for the dessert... I'll get to that in a minute. The service and staff were exceptional. The girl seating people was really friendly and kind. My waitress was good. No issues Five for them. My appetizer was Mozzarella Sticks. They were ok. Store Bought frozen. I ordered the "Chicken and Biscuits". Not sure of what the chicken dish I actually got was. It was more of a "Chicken Pot Pie without the crust". It was a very loose watery gravy and not a real country thick gravy as I expected. Overall it was bland. I added salt for taste. The biscuits were quite delicious. I wanted the Lemon Meringue Pie but they were out, so I ordered the Carrot Cake. Wow, I should've ordered the Carrot Cake before. Easily one of the best ones i've had. Five stars for the dessert. I like Greggs but it can be hit or miss with the food. The desserts, however, are worth it.

The two stars are for the ambience and mainly the food. I would like to give our waiter 4 stars-Rick. He was very professional, prompt and attentive. That being said, Robert Irvine needs to make a visit to this place. I don't think restaurants should have carpets, the décor and seating is probably 25 years old at least. They have an extensive menu, which isn't always a good thing. I ordered the Dinner entrée of the chopped angus beef with onion rings on top, I chose mashed potatoes and a salad as my two sides- $13.99. The beef I ordered medium well, it tasted as though it had been cooked a few hours before and just warmed up (looked it too), the mashed potatoes (although homemade) were in a small side dish and they had a bit of a light crust on them, seems they were plated a long time prior to me being served. They would do a better service if they closed down, remodeled , removed the carpet, didn't have an entrance that looked like a cattle line, and they should revamp the menu, cut it in half at least. Will not be returning until this is done.

First off the waitress was really nice. I went with a girlfriend/housemate of mine for my birthday. We just found out she is pregnant and I am apparently having a sympathetic pregnancy lol!! I love their pickles. We explained to the waitress that we both needed pickles and to keep them coming!! She was great. Wasn't too attentive, but she was always around and we never had to find her and ask for more pickles or drinks. My friend got this wrap with seasonal veggies that she absolutely loved. The fries we agreed sucked, but the wrap made up for it. I got the calamari pasta. The calamari was seasoned PERFECTLY!! It was exactly what k wanted. The olives and peppers were perfect. The pasta however was a bit bland. I filled up on pickles and broccoli cheddar soup which were also great so I couldn't finish my entree. I won't lie when I ate it later inn..I seasoned the pasta. So they lost a star for bland pasta and dry French fries. Oh did I mention I got turtle cheesecake and that I loved that too? Lol overall a great experience!!

Gregg's is an absolute waste of time and money. The only thing that it has going for it is deserts, and even those have become lackluster. You can get better service at a McDonald's then you can at Gregg's. So if you like horrible service and food that seems like a 6 year old made it then go to Gregg's, if you're an intelligent human who wants food that doesn't look they pulled it out of my 90 year old grandmother's pantry then go somewhere else. Hate to give this place only three stars cause i've been there numerous times but after tonight i cant in good conscience give them anymore. Let me preface this bad review with the positive things i have to say. My boyfriend and i have eaten there (bar only) on a handfull of occassions and always on off times and had a good experience with both bar and food. Ok now to the bad! Tonight was our first night there on a very busy Friday night, we got the last seats at the bar at the time which happen to be right at the entrance to the kitchen. Immediately we picked up on the fact that a waiter named Mike was clearly new and struggling although trying and none of his co-workers helped him besides one waitress named Arianna and i think the girl was named Amy. Normally i would pay no attention to restaurant politics but i was horrifed by how two other co-workers treated Mike. First off Snot (actually named Shane but he touched, scratched and swiped his nose so much we gave him that nickname VOMIT) and our bartender/waitress Patty who at one point said to Mike after he made a mistake and asked if he was in trouble, you aren't now but you're about to be. I dont know for sure but it seemed like she was in some sort of authority position because everyone seemed afraid of her. Well first off she left the bar empty for significant periods of time a least three times and we had to go out of our way to ask for another drink everytime ours was empty (the bar is not that big). The food was still good so i wont knock that and this is my only bad experience but i was quite horrified so i had to be noted.

Gregg's is a restaurant I've eaten at a number of times, but never reviewed. The atmosphere and building are nice, neither dated nor ultra modern. The prices are reasonable. I've never had a bad meal here, and never had an excellent meal here. Service on this trip was good, and that's typical. We were a group of 4 and everybody liked what they ordered. The desserts are what really make this restaurant better than average. Mile high pies, giant cupcakes, eclairs the size of sub sandwiches...just killer desserts made in house. The desserts push the rating above average. The only thing I don't like, is there are really too many items on the menu. Just picking a burger out is difficult!

The lobster roll, also underwhelming. Even the french fries were boring. Would it kill you to add some spice? Well maybe it would kill someone. This place would be Luby's if it weren't for the insane cake section of the menu. The chocolate lived up to legend, though it wasn't exactly the density of chocolate flavor I was expecting. If I come back, it's only for the cake. Spoken like a true pre-diabetic. And I'm not going to feel bad about it, especially if they don't refill my water.

The food here is average quality, and the menu has a very generic selection. However, a few things stand out to lift this place up to 4 stars. First of all, I love the atmosphere of the downstairs pub. The drink menu is awesome, especially the apple cider cocktails. They'll warm you up and make you pleasantly tipsy. The service is generally pretty good. Desserts are huge and supposedly great... I haven't tried them recently, so I can't say how great they really are. Pretty impressive selection of that too, though, with some unique offerings. All for a very reasonable price. Great place to go for brunch to get rid of that hangover. Also open pretty late on the weekends, so great for a late night snack.

I haven't been to Gregg's in years so I decided to give it a try. I can remember as kid not really liking their desserts and after a recent visit I remember why! The desserts are what you would find in a chain grocery store, mediocre with tons of frosting or whipped cream on top. Not worth the calories!

Here's my issue with Gregg's.. although the desserts are fabulous, the staff for the most part is friendly.. i wish they put a little more effort into their actual meals. My boyfriend and i get takeout here several times a week.. he loves the place, i think it's alright. The place definately needs a remodel.It's definately a food dining experience for people who have simple tastes. We normally end up here after doing the we're hungry but don't want to cook schpeal and just do the takeout scene. I can't say we've ever been disappointed with teh food.. like i said i just wish they'd add new things to the menu and mix it up a bit.

Greg's is usually a pretty busy place. Popular with the older folks, for sure. The food is good, and reasonable. The place is a bit dingy and outdated and the menu is also! This might not be such a bad thing. If you liked the menu 20 years ago, it's still there. You can still get a chopped sirloin, club sandwich, Monterrey chicken, or my favorite, the "hot bird" which is an open face turkey sandwich with fries and cole slaw. Get extra gravy and ask for the bread toasted. You can get a fried chicken cutlet with turkey gravy, a Reuben sandwich, or a nice meatloaf or chicken parm. All my old favorites. Nice comfort food. Back in the day, they had a pickle barrel in the corner and you could help yourself. They still have them but you have to ask your server for some, and you should because they are part of the place's history. After a meal, I'm usually stuffed. Desserts are much too much. If I got a slice of strawberry shortcake, I'd have to take home half. I used to buy cakes there for every birthday but the prices keep going up. I don't think they are worth it. A golden layer cake is $27! I buy my cakes at BJs now. I bought two birthday cakes there recently, a chocolate mousse cake and a marble cake that were as good or better than any restaurant dessert I've had. They're around 1/3 the price too. All in all, perfectly good food, nursing home decor, expensive desserts... Not really a place for date nite, unless you're at a point where your favorite cologne is Ben Gay! You can still grab a satisfying meal there. Pretty much sums it up.

We went to the DownStairs Pub for lunch. Food was good, I had the burger with mushrooms and My girlfriend had the Thanksgiving sandwich. Other than that it was odd. We were the only customers of our waiter. He seemed busy talking at the bar. Gave our credit card to another staff member to hurry the bill along. There were children jumping down the stairs in the middle of the building. Went on for over ten minutes. A staff member noticed. Did nothing. I just was not very impressed overall.

Gregg's has always been a family favorite. I've gone to eat here so many times. But recently it has gone downhill. Came on a Saturday night (understandably busy). When we were seated I asked for bread. Which took over 40 mins to get. Our order was taken about 20 mins after. We were here for over two hours, and honestly I wish I said something about the food because it was terrible. Firstly, I witnessed our waitress microwaving the tables food next to us. She microwaved the food twice, then brought it to the table where the woman complained it was cold and she took it back to the microwave! I'm pretty sure if the woman wanted microwaved lobster, she would have eaten at home. Could not believe I witnessed this at greggs of all places. Something must have been wrong in the kitchen because I ordered a baked fish and when it got the the table, it was cold. Baked seafood shouldn't ever be cold. Then it took us another 40 minutes just to be able to get our bill. Not sure whose to blame here. The waitress was overbooked for tables I think because not only was she running around like a mad woman, she had sweat pouring down her face. Probably won't ever eat here again. Very disappointed.

Well I've been buying their desserts for years, I decided to take my family there for lunch. It had to be one of the most unappetizing meals I had ever eaten. I ordered baked schrod with spicy cajun sauce. The sauce tasted like jarred tomato sauce and it had no flavor never mind spiciness. Everything that my family ordered was just bland, the chef must not taste anything. Gregg's should stick with dessert and leave entrees to someone else.

Deserts here are to die for ! The death by chocolate is phenomena! It has so much flavor and every time i have it is very rich, soft and fresh ! They also have other amazing deserts like the cheesecakes! Every year for thanksgiving we get the amazing pumpkin cheesecake it is always a pleasure when it comes out in the fall ! I think less of the food, i mean dont get me wrong, its really good , but i feel like its nothing really to brag about ! I enjoy this place with a passion and can't wait to stop by again !

I stopped in today for some dessert to go. Chocolate cake and a frosted apple strudel. The staff was nice and the desserts very fresh. The frosting on the cake is way too sweet for my taste though, and I can handle some sugary stuff. Strudel was good. The cake at Pastiche is balanced much better so I think I will stick with that, especially since the prices are about the same. If I were in the area I may try something else here though. I have never eaten in the restaurant but I do like the art they have on the walls

An ode to my dad: a guy with simple tastes, with whom I meet up to enjoy a monthly father-daughter dinner. I always ask dad where he'd like to go for these meals. I really don't have to go through this formality, because nine times out of ten, we end up at Gregg's. I'm never unhappy with my meals at Gregg's. They're pretty standard and straightforward. Some highlights include French Onion Soup and a wide array of seasonal salads. I try to eat healthy here because well, I feel that a lot of the menu is calorie-laden but not really special enough to waste the splurge. So on most visits, while dad chows down on chicken and biscuits or fish and chips, I'm digging into a large garden salad with grilled steak. The service is mostly decent, though occasionally you'll get someone who clearly doesn't want to get to know you. Considering the venue, this is not a big deal to me - we're not paying for white glove service, just dependable service. Sometimes you need to get wrapped in the comfort of predictability: the familiar faces of family, the same old haunts where you grew up eating years of Sunday dinners. For dad and I, Gregg's is our place. Like clockwork, every time we stand at the cash register to pay our bill, the server asks, "How was your meal?" And like clockwork, in response to this question, my dad answers with mock incredulity, "This is Gregg's, isn't it?" As if anyone needed to ask - if dad were a Yelper, this would undoubtedly be a five-star review.

Been going to Gregg's since I was a young kid with my folks. Never been disappointed. They have a huge menu and the portions are big for all meals. The fact that they are open so late is a plus too. I could have been taking part in their rewards program for decades but never signed up. They have double point specials and I never need an excuse to eat there, or get takeout. Their dessert menu is amazing, we usually get cakes for special occasions from them. Keep up the great work Gregg's!.

I love the food here. They have A LOT of options and a lot of different types of food. They give you complimentary rolls and pickles to start and most meals come with soup or salad. The plates are big and will fill you up. Very good prices for what it is. My favorites are the potato skins to start and the calamari pasta. I rarely have room for dessert but they are known for their indulgent desserts. I prefer sitting downstairs because it's a smaller, quieter, and not as bright and the service is a little faster. Generally speaking the service isn't very good and a little slow all around but I go for the food. Love meeting with friends here and I go as often as I can.

If I end up at Gregg's it's usually because the boyfraand and I have been doing the "I'm hungry" "I don't know what I want" "I don't feel like cooking" thing for at least an hour and we end up driving by Gregg's. I've never been disappointed there. They have big salads and the red chowder is yummy. You can't walk in and miss the dessert case with the HUGE cakes teasing you from behind the glass. I've been known to stop in just to get a slice of cake for the road on particularly rough days. Gregg is like an old stand by. You don't really go for the atmosphere or the best meal of your life. It's just a place to stop in and get some huge food for a reasonable price. Done and done.

I love to hate on chain restaurants, but I always end up here whenever old people are involved. The food is just OK, better served at a retirement home or at a low-budget wedding. The cakes and pastries on the other hand, are amazing. Those red velvet giant cupcakes are out of this world and the carrot cake is like a brick of heaven in your mouth. Overall, I hate eating here, but I love getting dessert for takeout.

I love this chain. It's a family run business that has spread to 4 or 5 sites throughout the RHode Island area. the food is excellent and the pricces are good, Helpings are also large. If you don't want to wait in the line on a Friday or Saturday night, sit in the pub! Rhode Island is smoke free now so it makes no difference. The pub is a little more intimate, with dimmed lights also. I've never waited longer than 10 minutes in the pub for a table.

I didn't exactly mean to have dinner here. I was well aware of the desserts and had heard vague "Oh, they have food too." comments from friends and family. We went on a Friday, but on the late side of the dinner crowd-around 8ish. It was not exceedingly busy. Our food was good. The husband had fish and chips, I had a Thanksgiving sandwich, and Little Miss had a hot dog, hold the bun (a helpful offer). It wasn't exceptional, but it was good in a local restaurant, Eileen Darlings sort of way. I would have really enjoyed the warm rolls if we'd had a couple more to go with the 8 pats of butter we had and, of course, the desserts were amazing. I'm not proud of it, but I fought my toddler for a couple forkfuls of peanut butter chips on the chocolate cake. If this was the sum total of my experience, there'd be more stars. What killed those stars? The service. It was awful. I got an impression of annoyance from the host when we were first seated, but I'm willing to let that slide. It took our waiter a bit more than a few minutes to make his way over. He asked if we knew what we wanted. No, I said, it was our first time eating here. He told us he'd give us a few minutes and started head off. We quite obviously did not have menus; I had to ask him for them while he was headed away. Eventually he made his way back, took our drink order, and told us he'd give us a few more minutes. This was becoming a theme. Third time around, our drinks arrived, and my husband had a couple questions. Ready to order? Not quite, but... I'll give you a few minutes. ...I had questions, my husband said forlornly to the empty air. It was kind of like having Houdini wait on you. We stared at each other, waiting, and took turns colouring the kids' menu. My husband finally ended up flagging down the busboy, who was actually really knowledgeable and made a good recommendation on the fish and chips. When the waiter finally reappeared, we figured we'd better order fast. My husband had already finished his soda. The waiter said he'd bring out some rolls, which was good, because we were all starving by now. The rolls made it out in a semi-timely fashion and were dropped off, drive-by style. They were nice and warm and practically useless since we had no silverware. Again, I had to resort to trying to flag down the waiter before he disappeared. We lucked out, because when he dropped off the silverware, he noticed my husband's empty glass and supposed he might want a refill. We enjoyed our dinner without seeing our waiter again. I saw several other tables' waitstaff, which was nice. He drifted back by, I ordered my dessert "for here" and when my husband ordered, he was asked if it was to go. Maybe this is a regular request, one for here and one to go (we'd ordered different things), but it seemed odd to me. Then, the cheque arrived and our often-absent waiter suddenly was hovering a table away. I think I saw more of him while I was paying the bill than the entire time rest of our meal. It was impressively awful service. I understand being a waiter is a tough job and I always try to be extra polite. I try to streamline requests, make sure my kid isn't behaving like a heathen, with the pleases and the thank yous. If she makes a mess beyond normal eating, I try to pick it up as much as possible. I understand if things take longer when it's super busy or understaffed. If I have to make a weird request, I'll probably apologise for it. It takes a lot for me to say it's awful service. The kicker is that the food is pretty tasty and well priced. We're pretty much in agreement that we won't ever dine in again, but takeaway? That's a possibility, especially with their excellent desserts.

I don't know CAKE what it is CAKE about this place CAKE that makes me CAKE come back CAKE. Ok ok I do know the reason and it is the cake. Let me review the other things that I like about Greg's and then I'll get to the cake. So it mainly Q-tips that go there and the median age drops significantly when someone under the age of 35 comes in. But they know what they want and this place is it. The food is typical New England fare that depending on the item you might have to add more salt and pepper. Mondays and Tuesdays are the best days to go because of the package deal (beverage which can be alcoholic entree and dessert). But what everyone loves are the desserts. Now I have only been living in Southeastern Mass for the past 8 years so its not like I grew up on this stuff. My first experience with Greg's was at a work potluck. Someone brought a carrot cake in. I remember the person in the cubicle next to me telling me I better get some cake first or by the time you want any it will be gone. I can honestly say that I haven't had a bad cake there. My favorite is the red velvet cake but I do have to say that the raspberry coconut isn't half bad either.

We had Gregg's in our Saturday dinner night out rotation for about two years. Mostly because of the pub downstairs...has better atmosphere and service than the upstairs/main dining area. They have a HUGE menu, but I can count on one hand the things that I think are worth eating. Definitely the deserts, the chowder, the pickles...aaand that's about it. Everything else is about average or below average, and I've tried just about everything. To be honest I can do better myself at home. For example the pot pie is not a pot pie at all. They just put down some mashed potatoes, strips of chicken, some dried up biscuits, and cover it with gravy that has peas and carrots in it. Guess what the country style chicken and biscuits is? The exact same thing! I hate to say it because it makes me sound like a food snob, but that really offended me and completely turned me off to Greggs. It's like they don't care. We really did try to like it, but after having one subpar meal after another we decided to take it out of the rotation for good. It just doesn't cut it compared to other local restaurants like The Grist Mill, 2 Pauls, Not Your Average Joe's, Chardonnay's, etc. Sure, you might pay 3 or 4 dollars more per plate at those places, but it's 100 times better, and to be honest there's no comparison. I think they're comfortable with their level of quality and will continue to do just fine without us...as it's always packed at Greggs.

They make some really good desserts. They have good soup as well. But I cannot recommend any of the other food that I've tried. My steak sandwich was bland and flavorless and was only warm (I ordered it hot - I had the option of hot or cold) and the fries were not good nor were they hot enough. How do you mess up fries?! I also did not enjoy the dine-in experience. The staff seemed like they don't enjoy their jobs and most of the other patrons were elderly. Not the kind of atmosphere I find it fun to be in. I will only get the soup and dessert as take-out in the future.

When I was a small child my family went to Gregg's. We visited multiple times between this location's opening in 1979 and my grandmother's death in 1983. After not having a reason to visit the area we never made it back. I remember walking in as a child and seeing the dessert cases full of cakes. I specifically remember their chocolate/vanilla checkerboard cake which totally blew my mind because I had no idea how they made it. Jump ahead to 2012 to my first time in the place since 1982/1983. There is no more checkerboard cake but there's still a lobby full of great looking desserts. They have eclairs the size of sub rolls!!! The vibe is definitely that of the bygone American family restaurant - think Howard Johnson's (if you know what that is). The clientele is exactly how other's have described - q-tips (white haired folk) and families with children. The menu is filled with a mix of middle-of-the-road items... nothing too bland nothing too spicy. The roast turkey dinner was fine. Someone else had the eggplant parm which was fine. I will up my enthusiasm and say the appetizer onion rings were amazing. The whole time we were there, waitstaff were walking by with gigantic portions of great looking desserts going to other tables. By the time we were done though we didn't have room for dessert.... But fear not! You best believe we left there with a shopping bag full of cake slices togo!! Subtract out the nostalgia for me and you have a decent family restaurant with food a tier or two above IHOP or Denny's but with way more options plus awesome desserts. You won't be blown away but if you're hungry and you're not looking for fancy-shmancy, you won't be disappointed.

Gregg's: a Rhode Island tradition. I think that makes these restaurants sound much cooler than they actually are; but, hell - if I am in East Providence and have a hankering for a tuna club, guess we're I'm going? Gregg's produces what many people around here want: low cost, classic food, not too spicy, not too bland. Big portions. Huge menu. In general, they seem to appeal most to the q-tips of this great state and their affinity for open face turkey sandwiches and roast beef dinners (these people deserve a place where they feel comfortable and they love to eat, too!), so although this place is not my stee-lo, I am not gonna hate on it heavy-like. There are many things that I like about Gregg's: I like the concept of a separate pub area where the wood is nice and dark. I like their whole crazy cake thang, that they've developed that niche in the Rhode Island market and people LOVE their towering desserts. I like their ridiculously delicious homemade pickles. I like that they have portabella mushrooms as a regular menu item - I can get them in a club, on a wrap, or on a salad. Finally, and this might expose me as the old lady I am: I LOVE that I can get grapenut pudding there every night of the week. Woot!

I think I've been to all the Gregg's locations now. This is probably my favorite traditional American cuisine restaurant of all time. Gregg's solid menu and reliable service has never gone down since my family has patronized the business. It is not haute cuisine but it is not diner greasy spoon either. It's a reliable restaurant to go to when you have people who cannot agree on what to eat. It is a sufficient restaurant to go to to celebrate family celebrations that are not quite holidays but are more than sport shindigs like elementary school graduations. It's a place you take your grandparents to because they will be comfortable there. Gregg's is well known for they're deserts. Their sky high pies and enormous cakes are displayed in a revolving glass carousel in their Warwick restaurant. They are a treat that you want to save room for. This is why I really like Gregg's: Pickles and warm bread rolls with real butter that you don't have to ask for. Drink refills at no cost that you don't have to ask for. A muted but maintained dining room. A homey feeling with booths that are comfortable and not isolating. Pubs in case you don't really want to see children while you are dining. Food that is down home fare. And specials that change as well as daily specials that are distinctive but not so unusual you wonder who wrote the menu. Tonight we ordered the Nachos, (fresh fried tortilla chips baked with monterey jack/American cheese blend and topped with sour cream, tomatoes, scallions and salsa,) the French Meat Pie, (a small pie made of pastry filled with ground beef and pork,) the Chicago Fire, (roast beef, turkey, lettuce, tomatoes, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing, served on grilled rye bread,) and of course a piece of chocolate layer cake. The French Meat Pie comes with two sides and I ordered a salad and a mashed potatoes. I've always eye-balled this entree and was recommended it by a friend for years. It was hot and delicious and flaky and hardy. The mashed potatoes were not that great, this side of reconstituted flakes but filling. An unseasoned chicken (weird) gravy accompanied the Meat Pie. The salad was a basic salad with some croutons on top and NO CHEESE was added (thank you). So sick of cheese on everything. And a garnish of an orange slice on a Kale leaf. I know that is not necessary but to me it is an old fashioned touch that is out of style at the national chains like Applebee's and even local ones like Chelo's. Maybe it's just me but a fresh garnish adds a touch of class that says: "please put your napkin in your lap, be polite and enjoy your meal." It also can make a regular entree look special; the little things are noticeable to me. Both C and I ordered meals we don't normally order. His Chicago Fire was almost as big as a Geoff's sandwich. It was delicious and juicy and he enjoyed it. The pickle surprisingly wasn't as good as the table pickles. Not a big deal really. The fries are fries but as C commented; any restaurant in RI that leaves the malt vinegar on the table is my kind of restaurant. Vinegar turns fries into a tangy treat as long as they're crisp and hot. Gregg's also has sweet potato fries which shows that they do keep up with basic restaurant trends. The nachos were simple with refried pinto beans not whole black beans and I didn't get one jalapeño pickled or fresh nor any olives, too bad. I'm not complaining, mind you. I knew what I was in for when I came here. This is the place to go to when you have that friend or relative that cannot take spices or heat. Like I said people with stomach trouble, the elderly, little children and others who just are not that into unique dishes will be happy with this place. It is down-home cooking in Rhode Island. Italian (meaning some pasta dishes,) sandwiches (all sorts,) and burgers, seafood, and New England traditional foods like Liver and Onions and a Turkey Dinner. They also serve salads and "Healthy Choice" selections with additions to flavor normally bland diet foods like lemon, crumb topping and Creole sauce and provide fat and calorie grams for each option. The menu is big and full of options. Some other nods to basic eating trends can be found on their paper place mats. Smart Diner Rewards Program, The Giving Cake (for each slice and each cake sold a percent is donated to Hasbro Children's Hospital,) Fundraising Opportunities, and The Giving Tree Project as well as being certified as a Green Restaurant. So if you are inclined to feel that the establishments you support should be community oriented as well as earth friendly you won't feel guilty coming here. You can also order their desserts for holidays and platters to bring home for parties. If you can't decide where to go with a hungry family and you want good service with a traditional flair Gregg's is really the best place to select.

Well, I'd give them 3,5 stars overall: 3 stars for the food and 4 stars for the service! SHORT: Gregg's is somewhere between Applebee's and Cheesecake Factory. The only difference is Gregg's is RI-only! Keep your expectations modest and you're definitely not going to be disappointed. LONG: I have been in Rhode Island for like six years now and I have driven by Gregg's (all four locations) at least a thousand times, but never got the chance to actually grab a bite there. Me and local friends pick a new place to eat every week (can be Gracie's or Gregg's lol) and meet for dinner. And, this week, we decided on Gregg's as they have been telling me how they used to come here when they were 10 years old. So, Gregg's really is some kind of a suburban RI tradition. Here is my experience: - Dine downstairs (Pub) instead of the upstairs. It definitely has more character to it. - Monday & Tuesday nights they have specials (you get a drink, soup/salad, entree and a dessert for $16!!) I ordered a quite delicious grilled salmon with brown rice and vegetables as my entree. So, they do have healthy options. - Our waitress (Martha) was absolutely amazing! I think the service wasn't even this attentive at Gracie's, which is the hot spot for haute cuisine in Downtown Providence. She is definitely one of the select few waitresses that deserve 25% tip... She got our complicated orders all right and everything came on time. Brought a second round of bread w/o making us ask for it, constant drink refills, 5 different pens with the check and she never disappeared from 'the scene'. Surprisingly I might have had one of the genuinely five-star services I've ever experienced in my life, at a suburban local chain restaurant in Rhode Island! - Save room for dessert my friends!! I got the DBC Cake (the infamous Death By Chocolate Cake). It wasn't like "OMG, this is truly legendary", but it tasted like a good chocolate birthday cake. But their dessert menu is actually as various as the regular menu at Cheesecake Factory! Lotsa choices! OVERALL: If you're in mood for a low-key dinner on a Monday or Tuesday night (or craving a bad-for-you kinda dessert), definitely come here. Satisfying food and really great value! Again, keep in mind that Gregg's is basically an old school local chain that's somewhere between Applebee's/Cheesecake Factory.

I ordered a Turkey Club (My other universal comparison item) (plus it's quick easy and hard to screw up) I must say Gregg delivered very tasty! bread toasted just right not over done and dry. The Turkey was fresh and not day old lunch meat! I asked the waitress who was super nice! about Greggs and she said they are still a Family owned restaurant which is cool. Only draw back is every-time I go there and ask for gray with my fries they usually forget it and then when they do bring it, it's this ity bity lil thing and I have s plate full of fries! sigh!

The food--take it or leave it...about on par with a TGI Fridays, perhaps. The dessert--ohm nom noms!! Me love the cake! The Giving Cake can only be described as decadent..aaah! And, you can feel good abuot it--Gregg's donates a portion of the price to a local children's hospital, yay for chocolate! Seriously, go to their website ( greggsusa.com ) and look at the cakes...you drooling yet??

The best part about Gregg's is their dessert!!! No matter what you choose its great! I've been there many times but it was my 1st time going with my boyfriend. We got fresh yummy bread and pickled cucumbers to start with our soups - minestrone, real good! I got a pasta plate which included broccoli but asked them to remove it and they did, my boyfriend got the chicken pot pie which he swears was SO good, but even better when he reheated the leftovers the next day. He got the cheesecake for dessert with cherries, awesome cheesecake but he says the cherries were too much. I got the raspberry coconut cake, OH MY GOD it was so FRIGGIN' GOOD!!! Huge slices too!!! Previously when I was there, I got the chocolate layer cake which is also to die for. It's definitely a place to go grab a drink and a desert.... Great prices... It's an old fashioned kind of restaurant, I think they need to modernize it a little bit. Though still a nice place.

Four words - Heath. Bar. Crunch. Cake. My ideal birthday, anniversary, any day treat. Gregg's also has a killer steak Caesar salad. I was addicted to the Caesar dressing and its one of the things I greatly miss about living in RI. The wait staff treats you like family and know the names of all the senior citizens who eat here weekly, if not nightly. And it's kind of like a diner. Kind of. And some of them are even open kind of late. Don't want to wait? Get a slice of divine Heath Bar Crunch Cake to go.

I went back to Gregg's with my parents who are in their 60s after not being there for many years. We went to the East Providence restaurant mainly because I'm getting married soon and want to have pies instead of cakes at the wedding. But, we got lunch. The menu is huge. I had the portabella mushroom panini which was really good. My parents liked their food a lot. The pies were OK. Not as fabulous as I'd hoped/remembered. The crust was eh- just OK. My mom categorized it as "industrial". The interior needs some serious work.. The place had that old people smell and it was DREARY. Anyway, we're going elsewhere for our wedding pies. Sorry Gregg!

Not a place with a scene. The dining room looks the same as it did in the mid-90's. It's not hot. Its just Gregg's. Standard family restaurant fare, good soups, and great desserts. The service is usually good, and the prices are reasonable. Gregg's is still OK.

I only stopped in for a drink. Being the summer months, I had sangria in mind. However, the sangria here is not my favorite... a recipe consisting of wine, brandy, orange juice & sour mix. Bartenders, please revise your sangria recipe.
